Path to Adventure

Join Adelie as she leads Unique ID on a path to adventure in the Linux file system. Their journey begins in the root directory and leads them to a Dragon guarding hidden treasure! Don’t worry, Adelie has some superuser tricks up her sleeves, er, wings.

    >> ADELIE: [acknowledging squawks]

    >> ID: Do you want to go exploring me?

    >> ADELIE: [inquisitive squawks]

    >> ID: I’ll tell you where we’re going.
    On a path to adventure.

    >> ADELIE: [excited squawks]

    >> ID: The path starts with root.

    >> ADELIE: [squawks]

    >> ID: And in the root is Home.

    >> ADELIE: [confused squawking]

    >> ID: No, we’re not squirrels.
    We’re Linux enthusiasts.
    Home is in the root directory.

    >> ADELIE: [comprehending squawks]

    >> ID: And in our home is you, and me.
    Let’s follow my path first.
    In my Home path is a Documents directory.
    But in my Documents directory is a branch in our story.
    We can follow the path down “sorted files” or we could follow the path down “to be sorted”.
    Let’s make like Robert Frost and take the path “to be sorted”.
    And there we find a file named “random file”.
    And when we open that file…

    >> ADELIE: [disinterested squawks]

    >> ID: What do you mean this is boring? I thought it was riveting.

    >> ADELIE: [contravening squawks]

    >> ID: Okay, then. You take me on a journey down your path.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: You’re home.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd Pictures

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd Unique_ID

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd embarrassing…
    Okay, let’s stop right there.

    >> ADELIE: [annoyed squawks]

    >> ID: This is a kids show, after all.

    >> ADELIE: [complying squawks]

    >> ID: Take me down a different path.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: Back home…

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd Documents… That’s more like it.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd forest… What is a forest doing in your Documents folder!

    >> ADELIE: [defensive squawks]

    >> ID: Okay. You are standing in forest. In forest is the directory building…

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd building. In building are the files ‘keys’ and ‘lamp’

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: You take keys and lamp and cd dot dot back to the parent directory.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: You are standing in forest.

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd pit

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: cd cave

    >> ADELIE: [commanding squawks]

    >> ID: In the directory cave is a file named dragon.
    Dragon!
    What are you going to do?
    We didn’t even bring any potions with us.

    >> ADELIE: [explanatory squawks]

    >> ID: Oh, you wrote a remove dragon script? Fantastic!

    >> ADELIE: [affirmative squawks]

    >> ID: So the dragon is gone.
    And what’s this? Hidden treasure?
    You take dot treasure.

    >> ADELIE: [excited squawks]

    >> ID: And cd! You’re back home!
    Wow! That was some path to Adventure!
